Agriculture ministers from the Brics countries converged in Mpumalanga in deliberation on ways to counter climate change in June this year. The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, in partnership with the Mpumalanga provincial government, hosted the fourday event from 19th until 22nd of June 2018 at the Kruger Gate near Kruger National Park.
Mpumalanga is an agricultural province that has been affected by climate change. Ministers from Brics countries deliberated on ways to counter climate change in agriculture. Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa had to come up with ways of sustaining food security through agriculture.
Mpumalanga MEC for Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs, Mr Vusi Shongwe officially opened the four day Summit, and he illustrated smart ways of dealing with climate change with Brics countries and other neighboring countries during the conference.
Delegates who attended the summit visited affected farmers and projects to hear how best the deal with challenges posed by climate change that seem to have affected food security and the economy. Rural areas and small farmers are said to be the most hit by climate change.
