Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Pat Ngomane has once again pleaded with motorists to be vigilant at all times and to obey all rules of the road. This comes after three separate major road crashes claimed twelve lives in Mpumalanga since last Thursday.
The first crash claimed three lives on the R23 road between Perdekop and Standerton on Thursday [15 June 2017] at 21h50 where two vehicles, an LDV and a sedan collided head on. The driver and a passenger of the LDV were seriously injured while three occupants of the sedan including the driver died. Two passengers including a three-year-old boy who were in the sedan were also seriously injured.
Another two separate crashes claimed eight lives yesterday. The first crash occurred on the N4 Schoemanskloof Road, 3km from the Montrose turn off at about 12h00 where a Toyota Avanza was hit on the side by a BMW SUV after it (Avanza) lost control and stopped on oncoming traffic lane. Three females from the Avanza died on spot while one critical female occupant later died in hospital. Five seriously injured occupants of both vehicles were rushed to hospital.
The other crash took place on the N17 Road between Bethal and Trichardt last night where five lives perished after a head on collision between two sedans. Both drivers and three passengers of the Toyota sedan were killed.
MEC Ngomane sends condolences to the families of the deceased and also wish a speedy recovery to the injured.
He has however urged motorist to obey the rules of the road as irresponsible driving and ignorance about road safety continue to claim lives of people on the roads. He said that motorist should plan their journey on time to avoid speeding when they realize that they are delayed.
He added that law enforcers will be alert to attend to those who violate traffic rules. He also encouraged motorists to be observant as this can help reduce road crashes.
