Community Safety and Security Liaison
Media Advisory

The rolling out of the Festive Season Road Safety campaign will see Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Pat Ngomane, National Sate Security Minister Mr David Mahlobo, Police Minister Mr Nathi Nhleko as well as Transport Deputy Minister, Ms. Sindisiwe Chikunga leading a Road Safety Campaign at Masoyi in the City of Mbombela on Friday.

Another campaign of this nature was conducted in Standerton in Lekwa Local Municipality last week. During the campaign, these government leaders are expected to interact with members of the community and also to conscientize them about crime related matters and using the road safely during this holiday season and beyond.
The campaign is part of many initiatives across the province that are currently rolled out in order to contribute towards the reduction of crashes that continue to claim many lives. Other activities include road blocks, rest stops and awareness campaigns.

The focus of Friday’s campaign will be on pedestrians because numbers indicate that they are also largely affected by road crashes along with drivers and passengers. It is also informed by the previous festive season crash statistics, which indicated that over 40% of road crashes’ casualties were pedestrians.

They were involved in crashes mainly due to jaywalking on the road while intoxicated, failure to wear brighter clothes while walking at night and also over speeding motorists who do not look out for pedestrians.
The event is expected to be supported by provincial MECs and senior government officials. Representatives from local municipalities and traditional authorities are also expected to be part of the event.

Members of the media are invited.
