A TIU traffic officer, Vincent Ngomane died in hospital after he was hit by a vehicle this morning on N4 Toll road in Schomanskloof near Montrose.
The incident took place when the on duty traffic officer was stopping a red Audi sedan and suddenly a highly speeding silver grey Chevrolet Aveo side swiped the Audi sedan and started to overturn on the road and hit the traffic officer.
Ngomane sustained internal injuries and was airlifted to the Nelspruit Medi-Clinic. He later succumbed to the injuries. The driver of the speeding vehicle also sustained minor injuries during the accident and he was taken to Medic Clinic for medical examination.
MEC Ngomane has sent his condolences to the family of Vincent Ngomane and described him as a strong man who was brave at work. MEC Ngomane says Ngomane was a hard worker and contributed in the fight against road crashes on our roads.
Ngomane (the officer) was recently awarded by the MEC with other three officers in Mbombela for their outstanding performance during the Festive Season.
The MEC further explains that is a very unfortunate situation for the department and all traffic officers, stating that Government is shocked by this kind of an incident.
He further contends that police should investigate the matter and if there is any wrongdoing on the part of the driver, he must face the consequences of his actions.
The MEC says speeding is a challenge on our roads and drivers must be responsible and manage their time when taking undertaking trips.
