A head on collision between a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) and a Light Delivery Vehicle (LDV) has claimed the lives of five people on the N4 toll road between Machadodorp and Belfast on Thursday (17 April 2025) afternoon. Three people were seriously injured. The deceased were passengers in both vehicles.

The crash is being investigated although reckless and negligent driving will not be ruled out at this stage.

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr. Jackie Macie again calls on motorists to adhere to the rules and reduce speed especially when driving in adverse weather conditions.

"We are deeply saddened by this development as the crash happened hours after our Easter Road Safety Activation on the same route. We have identified the N4 toll road as one of the priority routes based on the number of crashes that were recorded during the previous holiday seasons."

“We are again appealing for adherence to the rules and increased tolerance among road users. We are also pleading with motorists to always adjust their driving in line with prevailing weather conditions," stated Macie.

The MEC is sending condolences to the bereaved families and also wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

Ends.
