The MEC for Culture, Sport and Recreation, Mrs. Leah Mabuza, wishes to congratulate the nearly 800 runners from Mpumalanga who have qualified for this year’s Comrades Marathon. She also extends her best wishes to them for a successful race.
The Comrades Marathon takes place this weekend on Saturday 7 June 2025. This year’s marathon will be a down run meaning that the race will start from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, covering a distance of approximately 90 kilometres.
Mpumalanga runners will this year make 4% of the total number of runners expected in this year’s marathon. Last year, Proffessa Mthethwa from the City of Mbombela Marathon Club was the first athlete from the province to cross the finishing line. He crossed it at 05:45:30 clinching number 13 in his category and number 18 in the overall standing.
“It is not an easy feat to qualify for the Comrades Marathon. The amount of time and effort dedicated to qualifying demands dedication, discipline and perseverance. You must be proud of yourself for qualifying for such a prestigious race” said the MEC.
The MEC further wished Mpumalanga runners well as they will be running this year’s marathon “I would like to wish each and every runner from our Province who will be taking part in this year’s race. Comrades Marathon has proven that indeed it is the ‘Ultimate Human Race’ in that it is grueling test for endurance as we have seen over the years. I pray that the down run be easy on you all I believe that this year’s race will see one of the runners from our Province taking to the podium either as a winner or a runner-up. To steal from an Irish blessing “May the road rise to meet you and may the wind always be at you back”, concluded the MEC.
