Mpumalanga Premier, Mr. Mandla Ndlovu, today announced the commencement of operations at the Mpumalanga International Food Market (MIFM), marking an important milestone in strengthening the province’s agricultural sector and creating economic opportunities. The market is already receiving deliveries from farmers, with trading activities now underway.

The President of the Republic will visit the facility to officially open the market and interact with farmers, traders and buyers. The visit will highlight the market’s role in connecting farmers to markets, expanding agricultural trade and strengthening the province’s food production value chain.
The market has already created 47 direct jobs. Once fully operational, it is expected to create approximately 156 direct jobs. A further 4,033 indirect jobs are projected through farming, value addition, logistics and related economic activities.
To date, 1,153 jobs have also been created through small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) benefiting from the Agrofund programme. These enterprises will supply produce to the market, creating further opportunities for local businesses to participate in the agricultural value chain.
Recruitment for the market was conducted through the Department of Employment and Labour to promote fairness, transparency and equal opportunity in the appointment of personnel.
The commencement of operations demonstrates the market’s potential to support farmers, expand market access, stimulate rural economic development and create sustainable employment opportunities across Mpumalanga. As operations expand, the facility is expected to strengthen linkages between agricultural production, processing, distribution and logistics, contributing to inclusive economic growth in the province.
