Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison will host the eight edition of Participatory Education Techniques (PET) competition finals at the Mpumalanga Traffic Training College in Bushbuckridge local Municipality this weekend.

The competitions will see four secondary schools from Ehlanzeni, Nkangala, Gert Sibande and Bohlabela regions vying for the top spot which will also earn them a place at the national finals that will be held later this year in Umthatha, In the Eastern Cape Province 1 to 6 October 2018. Each region will be represented by five learners in both urban and rural categories.

PET is aimed at changing learners’ attitudes towards road safety by means of participatory education. It also encourages them to identify road safety challenges in their communities and to find solutions by way of research to the problems thereby providing them with a hands-on opportunity in resolving those challenges.

With the programme Grade 10 and 11 learners identify road safety hazards in areas where they reside, and to come up with research based solutions.

The provincial finals are a culmination of months and months of hard work by road safety officials where learners were competing at school level and selected to compete at district level. The finalists were trained by road safety officials and they are therefore expected to present their road safety models and also make oral presentations to a panel of judges.

The competition, together with road safety debates is held under the auspices of the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and is also supported by all provinces. It is part of many initiatives by government to promote road safety.
