The Komati Basin Water Authority (KOBWA), in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Land Administration, the Department of Water Affairs, the Nkomazi Municipality and the local Traditional Authority will be launching an Anti-Illegal Net Fishing Campaign at the Driekkoppies Dam in Nkomazi. The launch follows illegal fishing activities that have dire implications on the sustainable survival of the aqua life at the dam.
The Campaign, under the Theme: “Stop Illegal Net Fishing: It destroys the Environment”, is aimed at raising awareness of the national regulations on the protection, conservation and sustainable utilization of fish for future generations. It is also aimed at educating communities on acceptable fishing methods; and to sensitize the target group on the importance of fish in poverty alleviation and tourism. The launch will be followed by Road Shows that will run into the month of December. The Road Shows will target communities around the Driekoppies Dam which are Buffelspruit, Driekoppies, Schoemansdal, Schuzendal, Jeeps Reef and Middelplaas.
