MEC VR Shongwe has crowned the 2018 winners of the Greenest Municipality Competition during a gala dinner on 08th November 2018. The City of Mbombela Local Municipality scooped the overall winner, walking away with R100-thousand Rand, while Steve Tshwete Local Municipality took 2nd place and won R75-thousand and Nkomazi Local Municipality taking position 3, pocketing R50-thousand. The City of Mbombela will represent Mpumalanga at the 2019 National Greenest Municipality Competition.

The gathering also witnessed the awarding of 5 other local municipalities that performed well in various categories like Most Improved, Best practises in Waste Management, Best practises in Landscaping, Tree Planting and Beautification, Best practises in energy efficiency and conservation and Best practices in Water Management and Sanitation.

The annual Greenest Municipality Competition is aimed at recognizing the contribution that the municipalities were making to address environmental protection, social upliftment and economic growth. The ceremony was graced by representatives from various stakeholders in districts; Mayors, Councillors, MMCs, Speakers, Acting Head at Dardlea, DEA, Rand Water, Rural Development and Land Reform, and the SAPS.
