A partnership between the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL) and Services SETA has enabled over 700 learners to obtain driving licenses through a Youth Capacity Development Programme, an initiative by the department.
The initiative came after the department realized that being licensed to drive has become one of the requirements job seekers must meet in order to be considered for employment. Therefore, many young people miss out on these opportunities due to a lack of driving licenses while in possession of required job related skills.
This exclusion often leads to young people not being able to participate meaningfully in the economy. It was due to these findings that the DCSSL initiated the project with a focus on Grade 11 and 12 learners. The initiative also provided for youth who had already completed grade 12 to benefit.
The Youth Capacity Development Programme was launched in July 2016 by the DCSSL and Services SETA in order to assist the identified learners from disadvantaged backgrounds across the province to obtain driving licenses.
Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Pat Ngomane will officially hand over the driving licenses to the beneficiaries during an event that has been planned to take place in Mbombela. The handing over of the driving licenses will be followed by a media briefing that will grant the media an opportunity to interact with the MEC, Services SETA management and other stakeholders that contributed to the project.
This initiative is part of the #BEINGSAFEISCOOL Programme.
The event will take place as follows:
Date: Friday, 25 January 2019
Time: 08h00
Venue: Nutting House Guest Lodge, Mbombela.
Members from the media are invited.
