MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Ms. Gabisile Shabalala has reiterated her call to motorists to be extremely cautious following a horrific head on collision that claimed six lives around 20h00 today (14 June 2019). The six were declared dead at the scene.
The collision happened between two sedans on R544 Road between Emalahleni and Verena. In one of the vehicles, Volkswagen sedan, five people died and they are believed to be from one family. The deceased include three children aged approximately between two and 13 years. The vehicle was travelling from KwaMhlanga to Emalahleni. One of the deceased was a passenger in another vehicle which is a Mercedes Benz.
Three people including the driver of the Mercedes Benz sedan were seriously injured and they rushed to a nearby hospital in Emalahleni for treatment.
At the moment the cause of the collision has not yet been established. The Safety Engineering unit in the department along with RTMC and the police will investigate the incident.
MEC Shabalala is deeply saddened particularly as one family lost five members saying motorists needed to prioritize their safety and that of other road users at all times. She bemoaned that the roads are becoming more dangerous to travel on especially at night saying that this required more vigilance on the part of all road users.
Shabalala also added, "let us all work together to bring to an end the misery and pain bought about by these horrific crashes. Let us work with government and outroot reckless driver behaviour in order to curb needless loss of lives."
Ends.
