In an effort to enhance crime prevention in Mpumalanga, the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison will take 80 learners from Bonginhlanhla and EJ Singwane High Schools on a prison visit.
According to MEC Pat Ngomane, the programme has a big impact in crime prevention in the province as youth are sometimes used to commit crime. Both schools are located in Pienaar Township, Mbombela Local Municipality.
The prison visit is an annual programme of the department together with the Department of Education to educate young people about the dangers of crime. Learners will also experience the life in prison in order to discourage them from committing crime. Over and above, the learners will be afforded an opportunity to interact with the inmates to be motivated to stay away from crime.
It is believed that the opportunity will enable them to choose better friends that could not land them in jail. MEC Pat Ngomane will be accompanied by MEC Rigaina Mhaule of the Department of Education.
