Community Safety and Security Liaison
Media Statement

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Pat Ngomane has once again pleaded with law enforcers to continue showing no mercy to those who violate traffic rules and endanger other people’s lives. According to the MEC, reckless driving will not be tolerated and those who are caught should be harshly dealt with.

Dangerous overtaking is a serious a serious hazard as it has led to many fatal crashes and that is why MEC Ngomane has applauded law enforcement officers for bringing to book over 131 motorists for overtaking dangerously or on areas where they are prohibited to overtake.

The suspects were nabbed during normal law enforcement operations that took place from 1 to 31 January 2017 across the whole province. During these operations, 29745 were stopped. The operations further led to the arrest of 108 drivers who were not in possession of valid driving licences at the time they were stopped while 78 vehicles were discontinued for not being road worthy and 109 more vehicles were also impounded.

Over 300 drivers were issued with summonses for offences such as defects in the steering mechanism, worn-out tyres and faulty brakes. Some vehicles that were stopped did not have number plates and had faulty direction indicators among others.

All unroadworthy vehicles and unlicensed vehicles were impounded as such vehicles contribute to some of the crashes. Overloaded vehicles were also charged as they also contribute to accidents and lives are lost in such accidents, which is why about 110 overloaded were also ordered to normalize their loads before proceeding with their journeys.

The MEC further said some of these accidents are caused by motorists who fail to obey the rules of the road such as violating traffic signals. He has encouraged communities to also report bad driving because road safety is everyone’s responsibility and it cannot be left to government alone.
