MBOMBELA – This year’s Human Rights will be commemorated under the theme, “Rights to Food is Everyone’s Right Noma Kanjani, No food, No life, No Human Dignity” with the provincial commemoration held on Saturday, March 22 at Marapyane Stadium (next to Mmamethlake Police Station), starting at 09:00. Mpumalanga Premier, Mr David Mabuza will deliver a keynote address.

Human Rights refers to the basic freedoms that all South Africans should enjoy as prescribed in the Constitution and this year the provincial government will be zooming in on the rights to food as well as all issues of nutrition and provision of food for all.

Human Rights Day is commemorated annually on March 21 as a tribute to the 69 people who were killed by the apartheid security forces in Sharpeville in 1960 while protesting against the prejudiced Pass Laws legislation. During this period, the entire nation amplifies issues of Human Rights and indicates the progress made towards ensuring that they are recognized and enforced.

All people in the province are invited to join in the celebrations and learn more about their inherent human rights and witness government promote the Bill of Rights as enshrined in the Constitution.

Government departments such as Home Affairs and Social Development, SASSA among others will be offering services onsite. Legacy projects include the handing over of wheelchairs to people living with disabilities as well as the hand over of household furniture.

The ever-energetic Dr Malinga will be there to entertain the masses.
