MBOMBELA – Calling all IsiNdeble and Siswati writers!
The Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation is running a Short Story Writing Competition for Mpumalanga-based writers to write stories in the two dominant languages.
“The Short Story Competition is aimed at encouraging and developing writing skills of budding writers as well as keeping IsiNdebele and Siswati languages alive,” says the department’s Sibongile Nkosi.
Nkosi adds that the competition carries a prize money of R100 000 with the first place in each language walking away with R20 000, second place R15 000, third place R10 000 and fourth place R5 000.
“The Mpumalanga Provincial Language Act stipulates that IsiNdebele and Siswati are the designated indigenous languages of the province and they must be developed but it does not mean the other languages spoken in the province are not recognized,” concludes Nkosi.
The closing date for entries is 4 June 2021 and they must be accompanied by proof of residence. Competition rules, entry form and guidelines are available on https://dcsr.mpg.gov.za
