Media Statement

Four people were killed on Monday morning (10 February 2025) during a multiple vehicle collision between a Light Delivery Vehicle (LDV) and two sedans on the N4 toll road between Karino and Nelsville near Mbombela.

Two Volkswagen Polo sedans were travelling from Karino towards Nelsville when one of the two sedans first collided with a bakkie and the other sedan crashed into the two vehicles that had already collided head on.

Four of the deceased were occupants in a sedan that initially collided with the bakkie. The deceased were burnt beyond recognition when the sedan caught fire on impact.

The driver of the bakkie sustained serious injuries while the driver of the other sedan escaped with slight injuries. The injured were rushed to the nearby hospital in Mbombela.

The investigation into the crash is already underway although dangerous overtaking cannot be ruled out at this stage.

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr. Jackie Macie is calling on motorists to use the road cautiously to avoid deadly crashes.

He says: "Being safe on the road is every driver's responsibility, therefore every person must comply with the rules and also excercise caution at all times while driving."

He is also sending condolences to the bereaved families and is also wishing those who were injured a speedy recovery.

Ends.
