In an effort to ensure the safety of all road users, the Mpumalanga Premier, Mr. Mandla Ndlovu will intensify safety measures to prevent accidents on the provincial roads. Mr. Ndlovu will launch the Easter Road Safety Campaign this week, including an official handover of fifty (50) new traffic vehicles.
The Mpumalanga Province anticipates a significant increase in traffic volume during the Easter Weekend, and the acquisition of the new traffic vehicles is a direct response to the ongoing efforts to intensify traffic management measures.
As part of the launch of the campaign, the Premier will lead a multi-disciplinary operation with Public Transport Inspectors, Traffic Law Enforcement and the South African Police Service (SAPS) to deal decisively with drivers who violate traffic rules and regulations.
Mr. Ndlovu will be accompanied by the MECs from the Community Safety Security and Liaison as well as the Public Works, Roads and Transport, Messrs Jackie Macie and Thulasizwe Thomo respectively, during the launch of the campaign.
The Premier says most accidents are as a result of the violation of traffic rules and regulations, and the province has adopted a zero-tolerance to such behaviour to reduce fatalities. “Research studies provide evidence of a correlation between most car crashes and the violation of traffic rules by some drivers. These include drunken drivers and unworthy vehicles on the road. We will not tolerate such behaviour,” the Premier warned.
He added that the new fleet will primarily be utilised by the traffic officers throughout the province in regulating, managing, and ensuring safety on the roads, and promote compliance to the traffic laws. “This significant investment underscores our commitment as Mpumalanga Government to the safety and well-being of every road user. These are not just tools of trade, but a demonstration of our dedication to ensuring safer roads,” Mr Ndlovu expatiated.
Premier Ndlovu will outline the Provincial Government’s comprehensive plans and initiatives aimed at reducing road crashes and enhancing safety measures on the roads during the launch of the campaign, and promote a collaborative approach to road safety by various stakeholders including law enforcement agencies and road users.
“We urge all road users, on a visit to our province, including our tourists, to adhere to the traffic rules. We urge them to take rest at some intervals to prevent fatigue on the road. We must all arrive alive to our destinations,” the Premier explained.
