The increasing number of crime and illegal mining in Umjindi has prompted the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison to conduct a Crime Prevention Indaba. The Indaba was part of the resolutions taken during a stakeholder meeting that MEC Pat Ngomane lead in Umjindi recently.
Due to the number of mines that are no longer operating in the area of Umjindi, there has been increasing activities of illegal mining which seem to be contributing to the increased incidences of criminality in the area.
It is further believed that the influx of foreign nationals who are not documented in Umjindi is also viewed as another contributory factor to illegal mining activities.
Substance abuse was among the factors that contributed greatly to the increase of crime and there were also complaints about gangs that are terrorizing the community and also perpetuating violence in schools.
The Crime Prevention Indaba will bring various stakeholders together to tackle issues of crime on four topics in different commissions namely; illegal mining, substance abuse, school and health facilities’ safety and gangsterism as well as vigilantism.
The stakeholders are expected to come up with resolutions that will contribute towards government’s efforts in the fight against crime.
