Community Safety and Security Liaison
Media Statement

Crashes have an impact on mental health of primary and secondary victims. It is understandable that crashes happen on public roads; hence many people who see these crashes are keen on sharing such information. However, members of the public are implored to desist from posting graphic images and videos on social‑media platforms as it has a psychological impact on victims and survivors.

This is according to the Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr. Jackie Macie, who was reacting to the recent video of a crash that occurred near Balfour. The video in question shows bodies of people lying on the road and wreckages of vehicles involved in the crash. The images at times are received by psychologically unprepared victims with long lasting impact. The MEC says the public must assist by calling for emergency personnel, but once the authorized personnel take over the scene, no other person should interfere.

"The public should refrain from posting any images and videos because it is not only insensitive but also subjects affected families and individuals to needless victimisation and trauma," added Macie. He also mentioned that such individuals are liable for prosecution.
