As part of ensuring compliance by liquor traders with their licensing and mitigating socio economic impact of irresponsible liquor trading, Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison and other stakeholders will again lead a workshop targeting over 500 liquor traders in Emalahleni Local Municipality tomorrow.
At the workshop, the participants will be familiarised with all processes involved in applying for the licence, the conditions and the act governing liquor trading industry. The participants will also be encouraged to play their part in ensuring that their employees also comply with the law.
Irresponsible liquor trading and alcohol abuse has a negative impact on the society because many road fatalities are attributed to intoxicated drivers and pedestrians. There has also been surge in domestic violence related incidences as well as other violent and property related crimes.
The roles of all stakeholders with regard to processing and granting of trading licenses will also be discussed during these workshops. DCSSL believes that the most effective way to address alcohol abuse is through targeted interventions, such as the responsible trader programmes, which focus on those drinking patterns that are associated with harm caused by alcohol abuse.
