Media Statement

A multi vehicle collision has claimed four lives on the N4 toll road near Emalahleni this evening  around 19h00. The vehicles involved are two sedans and two light delivery vehicles (LDVs). The four died at the scene.

It is believed that one of the sedans lost control, veered off its lane and into the oncoming traffic, before crashing into one of the vehicles. This resulted in a secondary crash that involved three other vehicles. The deceased were occupants in two sedans, and they included a child estimated to be about two years old. The drivers of the LDVs escaped with moderate injuries.

The injured were first attended to at the scene before being rushed to the nearby hospital in Emalahleni. The probe into the crash is already underway.

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety Security and Liaison, Vusi Shongwe, has reiterated his call to motorists to be more cautious on the road in order to avoid these deadly crashes. He mentioned that without motorists' cooperation, it would be difficult to end tragedies brought on by road crashes.

"As we approach the Easter holidays, let us all be mindful of our actions on the road. We must respect the rules at all times, pay attention when behind the steering wheel in order to save lives," says the MEC.

He is furthermore extending his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and also wishing those who were injured a speedy recovery.

Ends.
