Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison will host the annual Participatory Education Techniques (PET) competition finals in Kinross this weekend.
The competitions will see secondary schools learners from Ehlanzeni, Nkangala, Gert Sibande and Bohlabela regions competing for the top spot which will also earn them a place at the national finals that will be held later this year. Each region will be represented by five learners.
PET is a programme aimed at changing learners’ attitudes towards road safety by means of participatory education. It also encourages them to identify road safety challenges in their communities and to find solutions by way of research to the problems thereby providing them with a hands-on opportunity in resolving those challenges.
With the programme, Grade 10 and 11 learners identify road safety hazards in areas where they live, and to come up with research based solutions.
The provincial finalists were selected during a rigorous selection process that lasted for months across the length and breadth of the province. The competition saw learners competing at local and district before provincial finalists were selected.
The competitions should be viewed as one of the many initiatives that government is employing to enhance road safety in communities.
The finalists were trained by Road safety officials and they are therefore expected to present their road safety models and also make oral presentations to a panel of judges during the finals.
The competition is supported of Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and all provinces are taking part. It is part of many initiatives by government to promote road safety.
