Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Pat Ngomane has commended traffic officers for arresting four speeding drivers around Mbombela during the weekend. Ngomane stated that speeding drivers are negligent and reckless because they mainly cause deaths on the road.

One of the drivers ( Mr. Colani Gama) a Swaziland National was arrested for driving 142 km/h at a 100 km/h zone on N4 near KaNyamazane T-junction on Friday 20 January 2017.

The second driver (Mr. Jimmy Ngobeni) was driving 140 km/h on an 80 km per hour zone on the KaMagugu road on Saturday. The third driver (Mr. Nkosinathi Madonsela) was driving 155 km/h on a 100 km/h on the N4 road in Gorge on the very same day.

Mr. Themba Mwale, the fourth driver was arrested for driving 146 km/h on a 100 km/h on N4 in Goch at about 15h50 on Saturday.

MEC Ngomane says that these type of drivers should be prosecuted in order to save the lives of other motorists on the road. He says that in most incidences crashes are caused by speeding, dangerous overtaking, and reckless driving amongst others.

Ngomane says that speeding can never be tolerated and those found to be breaking the law must face the full might of the law.

The MEC says that traffic officers will maintain visibility while dealing with those who break the law.

“As much as we try to improve our law enforcement operations and road safety to prevent road crashes and lawlessness, road users must always be cautious and obey road rules at all times,” said Ngomane.

The drivers were released on a R1500 bail each on Saturday and appeared at Matsulu Magistrate Court today [ Monday, 23 January 2017] while Mr. Jimmy Ngobeni appeared at the Nelspruit Regional court.
