In an effort to enhance road safety and improve the knowledge of young people in dealing with issues of road safety, Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison will hold Regional Road Safety Debate competitions in KwaMhlanga and Bushbuckridge this coming weekend.
The debates were initiated in 2004 after the road crash statistics showed that at least 40% of fatalities involved young people aged between 0-25. Road Safety Debates is therefore dedicated to young road users who travel the roads as pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, novice drivers and passengers. It is therefore against this background that the Department is conducting road safety debate competition for secondary school learners.
The regional finals at KwaMhlanga (Nkangala) and Bushbuckridge (Bohlabela) will take place simultaneously this weekend while Gert Sibande and Ehlanzeni regional finals will be held on Saturday, 12 August 2017. The provincial finals will be held at Mpumalanga Traffic Training College (MTTC) on Saturday, 26 August 2017.
Participating learners were selected across various secondary schools in the province. The outstanding learners at provincial competitions are expected to represent the province at national competitions that will be hosted by the North West Province later this year.
Nkangala regional finals will be held at KwaMhlanga Government Complex while Bohlabela regional finals will be held at former Hoxanne College of Education in Bushbuckridge. All events will commence at 08h00.
