MBOMBELA – The Mpumalanga Provincial Government will hold this year’s Africa Day celebrations in Schoemansdal outside Malalane on May 25.

This year’s celebration is held under the theme: “We Are Africa – Opening The Doors Of Learning And Culture From Cape to Cairo.”

The celebration will start with a march condemning the recent attacks on foreign nationals in the country, which gets underway at Way-Inn at 08:00 and finish at the Schoemansdal Community Hall. The march will feature local artists, community leaders and structures of local and foreign nationals business sectors.

“Government is using Africa Day to strengthen socio-cultural and economic integration of all Africans who live in South Africa,” says culture, sport and recreation spokesperson, Sibongile Nkosi. According to Nkosi, the celebration will also include visits to legacy projects in Schoemansdal, exhibition of African literature and food tasting of African cuisine from Swaziland, Nigeria, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Ghana. 

Africa Day commemorates the formation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on 25 May 1963. The OAU is aimed at promotion of unity and solidarity of African States.
