Wesley Gibson and Thembisile Mdluli were the toast of Mbombela as they walked away with the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards respectively at the Ehlanzeni Sport Awards on Friday evening.

Gibson, a 20-year boxer from Thaba Chweu, had a memorable year in which he won the light heavyweight provincial championship and silver at the boxing elite championships.

On the other hand, Mdluli had a stellar debut season as captain of the Mpumalanga Sunbirds at Brutal Fruit Netball Premier Division.

Mdluli, who plays goal defence, helped Sunbirds finish fourth on the log.

The two athletes will now compete for the coveted Provincial Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards against the winners of the other districts awards on December 5 in Middelburg.
