The MEC for the Education Mr. Bonakele Majuba will on 24 June 2019 visit Soshangane Secondary School, in Bohlabela District at 09H00. Soshangane Secondary School is one of the 63 winter classes centers established in the province aimed at improving learner and subject performance. During the unveiling of the winter classes on 18 June 2019, the MEC promised to visit some of the centers to assess how the programme is unfolding and to also provide additional support as and when the need arise.
The winter classes which started on 18 June 2019 will proceed until 01 July 2019. During the 10 day period learners will be exposed to critical subjects’ content in preparation for the writing of the preparatory examination leading to the final examinations at the end of the year. The Department appointed educators with proven track record to produce satisfactory results in previous years to teach in these winter classes.
The winter classes are compulsory for schools that performed below 70% in the 2018 grade 12 results will focus on identified challenging content and cover the highly enrolled subjects, such as:
• Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy,
• Physical Science, Life Sciences,
• Economics,
• Accounting,
• Business Studies,
• History,
• Geography,
• Agricultural Science and
• English First Additional Language.
The Department provided learners with the necessary essentials such as study guides including previous years’ question papers, examination guidelines, moderators’ reports and 2018 NSC diagnostic reports and nutrition will also be provided to all learners as well as scholar transport where there is a need.
To further determine the impact of the programme, learners wrote a pre- test on the first day in all the key subjects and will be expected to write a post – test on the last day, 01 July 2019. The MEC urged all the learners to appreciate and take advantage of the opportunity as it is solely intended for their own personal benefit. The MEC also encouraged schools which are not part of the programme to organize similar sessions in order to assist the learners to perfect their understanding of the challenging subjects’ content.
