The Mpumalanga Department of Education will host a certification ceremony for 640 food handlers on 19 March 2018 at the Mbombela Stadium, 10H00. These are the selfless women who make sure the learners in various schools in the province eat well prepared food every day. The Department saw it appropriate to provide them with some level of training in order to enhance their food preparation and presentation skills.

Most of these women were never exposed to formal education or any kind of training. The Department in collaboration with the Mpumalanga Regional Training Trust trained the 640 women in the following areas;

  • Personal and workplace safety and hygiene
  • Food Groups which includes starches, vegetables and protein dishes, cooking and storage methods
  • Practical Cookery and Food Preparation which includes Preparation, Presentations and service meal in a canteen environment.

Through the National School Nutrition Programme the Department is able to feed 905 884 learners, every day without fail and these women who are mothers, are playing a major role in ensuring that the food is prepared nicely for their enjoyment.

It is advisable that parents and communities encourage the learners to eat the food provided by the department since the issues of nourishment and balanced diet were taken into account when formulating the menu for each day.

The Department commends the Mpumalanga Regional Training Trust (MRTT) for giving these women an opportunity to enhance their food preparation skills as this will assist in ensuring that the food is of higher quality and more nutritious.
