PREMIER NDLOVU INTERACTS WITH THE AUDITOR-GENERAL’S REPRESANTATIVES
Audit outcomes are vital indicators of financial performance of state institutions in South Africa. The audit process is conducted by the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA), a Chapter 9 Institution, and the scope of the audit include among others, financial management to determine compliance of expenditure with applicable financial legislation.
The Mpumalanga Provincial Government is determined to improve audit outcomes. Members of the Executive Council (MECs), led by the Premier, Mr Mandla Ndlovu interacted with representatives of the AGSA in Mbombela on Wednesday to discuss the 2024/25 audit outcomes.
The audits reflect an improvement of clean audit achievements for some Departments and Public Entities in the province, while depicting the same outcomes of the previous financial year for some.
The AGSA attributed the outcomes of clean audits to a number of factors, among them, compliance to applicable legislation on financial management, an entrenched culture of internal controls and the implementation of the AGSA’s recommendations.
Premier Ndlovu says the 2024-25 audit outcomes are an essential framework to establish a culture of improving audit outcomes. “The development of implementable audit action plans will improve our audits. Our departments are in the process of filling critical vacancies to improve capacity, and therefore the appointment of personnel will be on merit, to achieve the audit improvement objective,” the Premier expatiated.
He assured representatives of the AGSA’s office that the root causes attributed to poor audit findings, such as Unauthorised, Irregular, Fruitless and Wasteful Expenditure will be addressed aggressively as a pathway to improve the audits.
