MPUMALANGA PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT’S INTERVENTIONS ACCELERATE SERVICE DELIVERY IN NKOMAZI
The Mpumalanga Provincial Government continues to implement targeted interventions in the Nkomazi Local Municipality to accelerate the delivery of basic services to communities.
As part of these measures the Executive Council (EXCO) embarked on a three-day Outreach Programme recently, which included visits to various projects to unblock service delivery obstacles.
The programme underscored government’s commitment to finalise projects for communities to access services. This was evident during the official opening of the state-of-the-art Silulu Secondary School and the handover of the Chief Mandinda Early Childhood Development Centre at Kamaqhekeza. The two completed projects were handed over by MEC for Education, Ms Lindi Masina and MEC Thulasizwe Thomo for Public Works, Roads and Transport, to improve access to education for the growing population at the Nkomazi Municipality.
A research study with significant data, suggest that 96.4% of the households in Nkomazi live in formalised settlements, compared to the 92.3% (88 775 households), recorded in the 2011 Census. Through the implementation of water delivery projects, 79.4 percent of households in the formalised settlements had access to piped water by 2022.
The number of households with access to water, is expected to increase, as the Provincial Government, working with Ehlanzeni District have invested in water treatment projects, among them, the Driekoppies dam.
EXCO noted that the number of households connected to electricity increased to 95.6 percent by 2022, compared to the 83.6 percent in 2011, while access to sanitation, improved from 84.5 percent in 2011 to 97.1 percent by 2022.
The EXCO Outreach Programme which culminated into a public participation programme on the last day, underscored the investment opportunities available within the Nkomazi Local Municipality. These opportunities are spearheaded by the Nkomazi Special Economic Zone (SEZ), and include the establishment of an agro-processing Industrial Park for the large scale citrus and sugar industries and a retail packaging plant. It is envisaged that the SEZ investment drive, will contribute towards the creation of direct and indirect job opportunities in the province.

EXCO approved several appointments in the Department of Education. These appointments are aligned with measures to improve the capacity of the Department to deliver the education services. They are as follows:

- Mr J M Gininda - Director: Quality Assurance.
