AGSA CONGRATULATES DEPARTMENTS AND ENTITIES WITH CLEAN AUDITS IN MPUMALANGA
The Mpumalanga Provincial Government remains committed to the culture of accountability, transparency and institutional integrity. This assertion was articulated boldly during the sitting of the Executive Council (EXCO) on Wednesday at the Government complex in Mbombela. The appearance of Departments before the oversight structures of the Provincial Legislature confirms this assertion.
The EXCO sitting on Wednesday follows the accountability of Departments during the week-long activities of the Taking Legislature to the People (TLP), in the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality last week.
In keeping with the principles of accountability, the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA) congratulated various Departments and Public Entities for the achievement of clean audits. Trophies were awarded to the following institutions for the clean audit outcomes of the 2025/26 audit cycle:
- Office of the Premier.
- Department of Economic Development and Tourism.
- Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs.
- Provincial Treasury.
- Mpumalanga Economic Regulator (MER).
- Nkomazi Special Economic Zone (NSEZ).
- Mpumalanga Economic Growth Agency (MEGA).
The clean audit outcomes represent the highest standard of financial performance, as well as financial statements, which are free from material findings. EXCO noted that the achievement signifies the proper use of public funds in accordance with applicable financial and legal prescripts.
EXCO implored Departments and Entities with no clean audits to develop and implement audit action plans, in areas of the findings such as the Unauthorised, Irregular, Fruitless and Wasteful Expenditure (UIFW) and lack of consequence management.
INSOURCING OF CLEANERS
EXCO has approved a plan to insource the services of cleaners. The decision is an outcome of a cost benefit analysis which was conducted earlier this year across the Departments and the Entities, to determine the scale of outsourcing of the cleaning service and the extent of the need. It underscores the determination of the Provincial Government to ensure that ordinary people derive the benefits of the 7th administration.
Currently, Departments and Public Entities use a mixed model of cleaning services in which some cleaners are employed permanently, on contract basis and appointed through cleaning companies.
EXCO directed Departments to implement the decision in a phased-in approach. This will ensure that current contracts of cleaning services continue without interruption until their expiry date, such as the Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation, whose contract lapse in 2029.
COMEMMORATION OF PROVINCIAL HERITAGE DAY
September is heritage month in South Africa, a period in which the country’s inhabitants celebrate their cultural diversity on the 24th annually. At the core of the
commemoration is the promotion of South Africa’s cultural diversity as a vehicle towards social cohesion and nation-building.
In Mpumalanga, preparations are already at an advanced stage, to host the function in Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality, where communities in their hundreds will attend. To ensure a full participation of all communities, the DCSR will coordinate build-up activities and Cultural Exhibitions. These activities include the participation of public servants in music, poetry and dance, especially at the Riverside Government complex and in KwaMhlanga. The activities are expected to take place from 2 – 23 September 2026.
The Premier, Mr Mandla Ndlovu accompanied by MECs, will deliver the keynote address.
EXCO approved the plan for the Heritage Day commemoration, to cement the transformation agenda of uniting the citizens in their diversity.
