Plans to remove asbestos from the roofs of many houses is at an advanced stage in Mpumalanga. The Provincial Government has earmarked several households in various municipalities to eradicate asbestos roofing, which is detrimental to human lives.
Research studies estimate more than 20 000 the number of houses with the asbestos material. The advancement of the eradication plan has resulted in the removal of the health hazard material in 213 houses by the end of the 2024/25 financial year, spearheaded by the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA).
Several houses are also earmarked for the gradual removal in the Chief Albert Luthuli, Nkomazi, Bushbuckridge and Dipaleseng Local Municipalities. In the Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality, 115 houses were successfully removed and refurbished.
The Premier, Mr. Mandla Ndlovu will lead an entourage of the Provincial Government to visit few completed houses and the beneficiaries at Mantjolo village in Manzana. The entourage will include MEC Speed Mashilo of CoGHSTA, Executive Mayors and Senior Government officials, as part of the oversight.
