MEC Macie warns motorists to obey rules to avoid accidents during school holidays

MBOMBELA – As the school holidays commence and many families prepare for the Heritage Day long weekend, Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr. Jackie Macie, has appealed to all road users to exercise extreme caution.

A significant increase in traffic volumes is expected from today across major routes in the province, as people travel for family gatherings, religious pilgrimages and Spring activities.

MEC Macie says law enforcement officers will show no tolerance for reckless behaviour.

“No reckless or negligent driver must be spared. Our officers have been instructed to act decisively against anyone who endangers lives on our roads,” said Macie.

“We want motorists to ensure their own safety and that of other road users. Do not drink and drive, do not transgress the rules of the road, and ensure your vehicle is roadworthy before you travel.”

He made a special appeal to public transport operators not to overload and to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy. He also urged all drivers to rest after every two hours or 200 kilometres of driving.

Motorists are also advised to factor in extra travelling time for roadworks and to adjust their driving according to inclement weather conditions.

MEC Macie confirmed that traffic law enforcement officers and emergency personnel will remain on high alert on all major corridors to enforce the law and respond to emergencies.
