Mpumalanga MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport, Mr. Thulasizwe Thomo is pleased to announce the reopening of the P171/1 road linking Chrissiesmeer and Carolina following the successful reconstruction of the collapsed bridge.
The road was temporarily closed after the structural failure of the corrugated culvert bridge, which posed safety risks to motorists and residents in the surrounding areas. The Department immediately prioritised the reconstruction project to restore safe and reliable connectivity for communities, businesses, and road users.
The new structure has now been completed, and the road will be officially reopened for traffic flow on 29 September 2025.
MEC Thomo commended the project team and contractors for their commitment to fast-tracking the reconstruction despite challenges and for ensuring that quality standards were not compromised.
“ The reopening of this road will ease movement for residents, farmers, and businesses in this corridor. It will also support economic activity in the Gert Sibande District, where reliable infrastructure is essential for growth and development. I thank the public for their patience and cooperation during the construction period,” said MEC Thomo.
The Department remains committed to maintaining and upgrading provincial roads to enhance safety, mobility, and economic opportunities for the people of Mpumalanga.
