Public Works, Roads and Transport
Media Statement
The MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport in Mpumalanga, Mr. Thulasizwe Thomo, has noted with concern the incident in which several Buscor buses caught fire at the Buscor bus depot in Barberton during the night today .
MEC Thomo is relieved that, at this stage, no injuries or loss of life have been reported as a result of the incident. The safety of workers, commuters and surrounding communities in Barberton and neighbouring areas remains the foremost priority of the Department.
The MEC has engaged Buscor management to establish the extent of the damage and to receive assurances on contingency measures put in place to minimise disruptions to public transport services, particularly for commuters in Barberton who rely on Buscor buses for daily travel during the festive period.
The Department is awaiting a full report from Buscor, including the preliminary findings on the cause of the fire, while relevant authorities conduct their investigations. MEC Thomo has emphasised the importance of strict adherence to safety, fire prevention and risk management measures at all public transport facilities, including depots and yards.
“As we move through this peak festive season, it is critical that all public transport operators heighten safety standards, ensure regular inspections of facilities and vehicles, and have clear emergency response plans in place,” said MEC Thomo.
The MEC further called on commuters, particularly those travelling in and around Barberton, to remain calm and assured them that the Department will continue to work closely with Buscor and other stakeholders to ensure continuity of services and the safety of the public.
MEC Thomo will be visiting the incident scene. Updates will be communicated as more information becomes available.
