The school calendar year ends on Friday, 12 December 2025. Consequently, movement between provinces and SADC countries is expected to rise, creating a surge in traffic volumes nationwide. Many will be attending wedding celebrations and end‑of‑year staff functions, while festive shopping and vacation leave on Monday ahead of the public holiday on Tuesday will add to the flow. Traffic is also projected to peak on 19 December 2025 (the weekend before Christmas) and on 26 December 2025 for New‑Year travel.
Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr Jackie Macie, appeals to all motorists and road users to help save lives. He reminded that many families have been devastated by holiday‑season crashes.
“Vehicle owners must ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and all defects are corrected before travelling,” says Macie. Motorists are urged to obey road rules, avoid drinking and driving, and adjust to prevailing conditions, including wet weather.
Traffic‑law enforcement will be intensified this weekend, with collaboration among the province, municipalities and the police. The Department’s Road Safety Education programme will run awareness sessions for drivers, pedestrians and passengers. Law enforcers will be zero‑tolerant towards drunk driving, excessive speeding, overloading and unroadworthy vehicles. Vehicles without registration plates will be impounded.
“We are confident that the plans we have put in place will have an impact. With increased cooperation and compliance by all road users, many lives can be saved,” Macie insists.
