Community Safety and Security Liaison

Many people are expected to travel to Mbombela for the Metro FM Music Awards (MMA) while many more soccer supporters will also take to the roads to attend the much anticipated Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. Both the MMA and the derby will take place this Saturday. Further to that, some people are expected to resume work on Monday after the holidays.

It is in this context that the Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr. Jackie Macie is making a call to every driver to be highly cautious and obey the rules.

The MEC says statistics indicate that it is mostly workers who get injured and die in crashes, which are mostly avoidable.

He states that it is costly for the economy of the country to continuously lose workers on the road as they are the backbone of the economy and most are breadwinners, they also keep many families afloat considering high levels of unemployment in the country.

He states that most of these workers will go out in numbers using the road to attend this weekend's festivities. More workers will travel this weekend in order to resume work on Monday.

"As we celebrate Workers Month in May, let us use the road safely and responsibly in order to prolong the lives of our workers. Losing workers on the road does not only leave devastation in families, it also places a huge burden on the economy of the country. Families that they leave behind must also be assisted by the state," says Macie.

Meanwhile, Macie also mentioned that the security cluster remains on high alert throughout this weekend, and the law enforcement visibility will also be heightened.
