As many people travel to Workers Day rallies across the country, while others attend festivities and family gatherings, traffic volumes are expected to increase from Thursday through Sunday.
In this context, Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr Jackie Macie, has reassured motorists that traffic law enforcement operations that commenced during the Easter long weekend remain in place this weekend. He reminded all road users travelling this long weekend to behave responsibly and obey the rules of the road.
“We are calling on all road users to be cautious. Those organising transport for groups attending rallies, football matches and family gatherings must ensure people are transported in roadworthy vehicles and that drivers ramain sober at all times. Long-distance drivers must also rest every 200 kilometres or every two hours of driving,” said MEC Macie.
From 20 to 26 April 2026, the province recorded 23 fatalities compared to 26 fatalities in 2025. Most crashes occurred between 14:00 and 22:00. Seven pedestrian deaths were also recorded during that period.
The Nkangala Region recorded four fatalities, followed by Ehlanzeni Region with two, and Gert Sibande Region with one.
Meanwhile, road users are also urged not to cross overflowing bridges amid the rains that flooded most rivers across the province.
Motorists are also urged to adjust their driving in line with the prevailing weather conditions to avoid crashes.
