The Mpumalanga Department has made a decision to suspend the 39 year old employee stationed in the Lydenburg Hospital who was arrested by the South African Police Service ( SAPS) after being found with human tissue. (Placenta).

The Police in Lydenburg arrested the woman who is an employee of the Department of Health on Wednesday, 17 September 2025. The female suspect was apprehended in Extension 2, Mashishing, and has since appeared in court and is currently in custody.

The Department would also like to correct information published in the media about the incident that the human tissue referred to, is actually placentas, obtained from woman who give birth.

The MEC for Health, Ms. Sasekani Manzini has applauded the SAPS for the arrest. She is hopeful that the internal investigation by the Department will bring to light what actually transpired. She further says any other person or employees who will be found to have taken part in this incident will be charged accordingly. 

MEC says the department will work with the SAPS to ensure that justice is served. 

The employee is yet to be served with the suspension letter since she is in custody.
