The Mpumalanga Provincial Government (MPG) and the University of Mpumalanga (UMP) will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a formal framework for collaboration. The MoU will enable the MPG to leverage the University’s expertise, research capacity, and human capital in support of Provincial development priorities.
The Premier, Mr. Mandla Ndlovu and UMP’s Chairperson of Council, Mr. Sabelo Mahlalela will lead an entourage of MECs and the Varsity’s delegation respectively, during the significant function.
- Amongst the key areas of collaboration are:
- Promote sustainable agriculture, innovation, and applied research.
- Enhance the skills and capacity of government employees through tailored training programmes.
- Support environmental conservation, eco-tourism, and sustainability initiatives.
- Advance healthcare research, training, and community health programmes.
- Foster local economic development, entrepreneurship, and job creation.
- Identify and facilitate strategic investments aligned with Provincial development objectives.
- Strengthen education through teacher training, curriculum support, research, and innovation.
- Develop and implement technological solutions to improve service delivery.
- Enhance local government capacity, governance, and service delivery.
Premier Ndlovu views the ceremony as a game-changer in strengthening partnerships to advance the Provincial economic development priorities. “UMP is a reputable academic institution in the country, with vast research capacity. We are excited that the MoU will serve as a basis for a partnership to optimise on the capacity that the University has, in a number of research areas, which will ultimately grow our economy for the benefit of our communities in Mpumalanga,” Premier Ndlovu asserted.
