The Mpumalanga Provincial Government will commemorate Freedom Day with a provincial celebration to be hosted in the City of Mbombela, bringing together communities, government leaders, stakeholders and social partners to reflect on the country’s democratic journey and recommit to the values of freedom, equality and human dignity.

Freedom Day, observed annually on 27 April, marks the historic milestone of South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994 and serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made to secure the freedom enjoyed today. The 2026 commemoration takes place under the theme:

“Freedom and the Rule of Law: Thirty Years of Democratic Citizenship.”

The celebration will provide a platform to reflect on the progress made over the past three decades of democracy, while also encouraging dialogue on the work that remains to build a more inclusive and equitable society.

As part of the programme, Premier of Mpumalanga, Mr Mandla Ndlovu, will deliver the Keynote Address, highlighting the province’s commitment to advancing democratic governance, social cohesion and service delivery. The event will also feature cultural performances, exhibitions by government departments, and community engagements aimed at bringing services closer to the people of Mpumalanga.
