PRESIDENT RAMAPHOSA OFFICIALLY OPENS KING NYABELA HOSPITAL, EXPANDING ACCESS TO QUALITY HEALTHCARE IN MPUMALANGA
President Cyril Ramaphosa today, 4 August 2026, officially opened King Nyabela Hospital in the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, Nkangala District, marking a significant milestone in expanding access to quality healthcare for the people of Mpumalanga.
King Nyabela Hospital is a Level 1 district hospital with a capacity of 220 beds. The state-of-the-art facility provides surgical, medical, paediatric, antenatal, post-natal, neonatal and gynaecology services, as well as maternity, kangaroo mother care and high care services. It also features three operating theatres, a fully equipped outpatient department and an Accident and Emergency unit, significantly strengthening healthcare services in the district.
The hospital is named after King Nyabela, a respected leader of the Ndzundza-Ndebele people and son of King Mabhoko. Remembered for his steadfast leadership and commitment to the wellbeing of his people, King Nyabela occupies an important place in the history and heritage of Mpumalanga. His legacy continues to inspire generations and symbolises courage, resilience, unity and selfless leadership in the face of adversity.
As a R1.6 billion investment in public healthcare, King Nyabela Hospital will provide a comprehensive District Hospital Healthcare Package to communities in Steve Tshwete and surrounding areas, improving access to quality healthcare services while strengthening the province's ongoing preparations for the implementation of National Health Insurance (NHI). The facility reflects government's continued commitment to ensuring that quality healthcare is accessible, equitable and responsive to the needs of all communities.
In his welcoming remarks, Mpumalanga Premier, Mr Mandla Ndlovu, described the opening of the hospital as a demonstration of government's commitment to improving the lives of its citizens through quality public healthcare.
"The opening of King Nyabela Hospital is a powerful symbol of what can be achieved when government remains committed to improving the lives of its citizens. Together, we are bringing healthcare closer to our communities and building a healthier Mpumalanga for generations to come."
Officially opening the hospital, President Cyril Ramaphosa said the project had not only strengthened healthcare services but had also created meaningful economic opportunities for local communities.
"It is significant that the community has been actively involved in this project, with over 1,100 work opportunities created, including more than 520 work opportunities for women."
The President acknowledged that the project had faced challenges during construction and reaffirmed government's commitment to protecting public infrastructure projects from disruption.
"We must be clear that acts of intimidation and violence relating to the construction of public infrastructure will not be tolerated. We cannot stand for the construction of hospitals, clinics, roads, dams or any public infrastructure being disrupted to advance some individuals' financial interests."
President Ramaphosa further called on communities to safeguard the facility for future generations.
"Let this hospital be a living tribute to their resolve, principle and commitment. In taking forward their legacies, I call on the community to care for this facility."
