Mpumalanga Premier, Mr. Mandla Ndlovu has convened a multi-sectoral Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) Council to intensify measures for the fight against the GBVF crisis. The council was established in February 2025, following the declaration of GBVF as a national crisis, by the President, Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa.
Members of the Executive Council, Executive Mayors, Traditional Leaders, civil society organisations and GBVF activists, are key stakeholders of the council.
The high-level meeting brings together the stakeholders with the primary objective of intensifying measures to fight against the GBVF crisis.
Just as the country is stepping up measures to fight the GBVF cases, Premier Ndlovu’s decision to convene the GBVF Council, affirms the province’s commitment to intensify the fight against the crisis.
The meeting will analyse a Twelve-Month Implementation Report, which highlight the province’s performance in the implementation of the five priorities classified as pillars to accelerate the GBVF fight. The priorities are: the prevention and rebuilding of social cohesion, law enforcement, protection, safety and justice, victim and survivor centred support, communication, stakeholder engagement and mobilisation and institutional arrangement.
The priorities are contained in the Provincial Strategic Plan on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) which was developed by the Provincial Government in 2024 and is aligned to the National Strategic Plan. The plan seeks to strengthen the coordination of multi-sectoral interventions to combat GBVF, while advancing the protection of vulnerable groups and restore public safety.
Premier Ndlovu has also invited the criminal justice system to reflect on progress made in the arrest and prosecution of GBVF perpetrators. It is envisaged that the outcome of the meeting will guide the province in the efforts to intensify the provincial response towards the fight against GBVF.
The meeting for the Provincial Council on GBVF is arranged as follows:
