The Premier of Mpumalanga Mandla Ndlovu will on Thursday launch the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign.
The campaign is aimed at creating awareness about gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), challenge discriminatory attitudes against the victims and call for improved laws and services to end violence against women and children. The campaign takes place from 25 to 10 December annually.
According to the Provincial statistics released in the first quarter of 2025/26 financial year, Vosman Police Station is among the top five stations with high contact crime in the Province. Contact crimes include murder, attempted murder, rape and assault with grievous bodily harm (GBVH).
Most of rape cases in the Province occur in the residences of both the perpetrators and or the victims. They also occur in public places such as on the streets, open fields, recreational parks, parking areas and inside the abandoned buildings.
According to the Provincial Statistics on GBVF, at least 764 cases were reported during the first quarter, where women and children became victims. With regards to domestic violence related crimes Nkangala District recorded 38 percent, Ehlanzeni 36 percent and Gert Sibande 26 percent.
The visit to Emalahleni Local Municipality by Premier Ndlovu and the entire Executive Council Members, is aimed at intensifying awareness in the fight against gender-based violence and femicide, as well as to strengthen the platforms of engagement between government and communities especially women and children.
The campaign is also aimed at strengthening collaboration and partnership with non-government stakeholders in the fight against gender-based violence and femicide by soliciting inputs from various stakeholders on how best to eliminate the scourge. The campaign will also enhance the support and empowerment of the victims of violence and abuse, whilst it also expands on the call to action for men and boys to stand up against the abuse to women and children.
Communities are urged to play their part by reporting the abusers, challenge and denounce cultural practices that perpetuate gender inequalities, be sensitive and supportive to GBV victims and by protecting children from exposure to violence and harmful content on internet and social media including pornography and sexual solicitation.
This year’s campaign will be held under the theme: “Letsema: Men, Women, Boys and Girls working together to end Gender-Based Violence and Femicide”
