President Cyril Ramaphosa today officiated the Ummbila Emoyeni Wind Energy Facility in Bethal, Govan Mbeki Local Municipality, marking the commercial operation of Mpumalanga's first wind energy facility. Developed by Seriti Green, the project represents a significant milestone in advancing South Africa's energy security and the Just Energy Transition, while reinforcing Mpumalanga's position as the country's energy hub. The facility is expected to expand renewable energy generation, attract investment, create jobs and support sustainable economic growth.
In his welcoming address, Mpumalanga Premier, Mr Mandla Ndlovu, described the facility as far more than an energy project, saying it is "about creating jobs, developing skills, attracting investment, restoring dignity to families, and opening opportunities for the next generation." He added that the project represents "hope for young people seeking employment, empowerment for local businesses, and a catalyst for inclusive and sustainable economic growth," underscoring government's commitment to ensuring that communities are at the centre of the province's energy transition.
Officially launching the facility, President Ramaphosa said the project demonstrates how South Africa's Just Energy Transition is being realised through practical partnerships between government, Eskom, the private sector and local communities. He noted that more than 1,000 jobs have already been created through the project, with around half of those opportunities benefiting people living within a 10-kilometre radius of the facility. The President also highlighted that more than 18,500 people have registered on the Seriti Green Skills Hub, creating pathways to skills development and future employment opportunities, particularly for young people and women.
The President stressed that "the true measure of the success of this just energy transition is the extent to which it creates opportunities for the South African people." He further emphasised that "the just energy transition should create opportunities that remain long after construction has been completed. It should strengthen local businesses. It should equip young people with new skills. The just energy transition must leave communities stronger than before."
Concluding his address, President Ramaphosa reflected on Mpumalanga's enduring contribution to the country's development, saying, "For generations, Mpumalanga has powered South Africa and now it is paving the way to a new future."
The Ummbila Emoyeni Wind Energy Facility stands as a landmark investment that strengthens South Africa's energy security while delivering lasting benefits to the people of Mpumalanga through job creation, skills development, local economic participation, infrastructure investment and a more sustainable and resilient energy future.
