Yesterday, the 2nd of February 2026, at around 18:00 pm, the Mpumalanga Department of Health received information that there is leakage in the oxygen tank which supplies oxygen to patients at Rob Ferreira hospital in the City of Mbombela.

One of the staff members, while knocking off and driving off in the parking lot, lost control of the car and drove into the Oxygen tank. The tank then started leaking Oxygen.

The hospital therefore evacuated the patients from nearby wards. Activated the Fire department and called the service provider for emergency protocols. They then

dispatched a technician, who managed to turn off the oxygen supply from the tank, the backup Oxygen supply was activated. The Department also ordered about 60 oxygen cylinders which were delivered last night to ensure that there is enough supply for all patients.

By 08h30 this morning the damaged caused by collision was fixed, damaged machine replaced. Tank refilled and the hospital was back on the main oxygen supply from Oxygen tank.

There were no injuries nor safety issues from patients, staff and staff only the driver of the car sustained minor injuries, she has since been discharged from the hospital.
