Community Safety and Security Liaison
Media Statement

“The number of lives lost due to avoidable road crashes and collisions demands stricter penalties and sanctions for offenders. Despite numerous campaigns and enforcement operations, reckless driving continues to surge. It is evident that issuing written notices and arresting speedsters is not enough.

We are therefore calling for the suspension of driving licences for motorists caught and convicted of excessive speeding. This measure will significantly strengthen government’s road‑safety initiatives.”

This is according to the MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr Jackie Macie, who was reacting to recent arrests for excessive speeding on the N3 toll road between Villiers and Heidelberg. In the past two weeks, nearly 20 drivers were caught speeding, with the highest recorded speed being 180 km/h in a 120 km/h zone.

On Saturday, 10 January 2026, a 34‑year‑old female driver was nabbed operating a Jeep SUV at 171 km/h in a 120 km/h zone.

A 61‑year‑old male driver was also booked for driving a BMW sedan at 170 km/h on the same route.

Both suspects were released on R2 000 bail each and are expected to appear in court soon
