Three people were killed on the N4 toll road between Machadodorp and Belfast when they were struck by a sedan at around 16h00 on Friday, 03 April 2026. The deceased include a woman and two minors, presumed to be her children, who all died at the scene on impact.

An investigation into the crash is underway, with the police investigating three counts of culpable homicide.

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr Jackie Macie, has sent his heartfelt condolences to the family. He is also urging motorists to always be on the lookout for pedestrians. The MEC said that even during previous holidays many people lost their lives while walking on the road.

“Motorists must always be on the lookout for pedestrians. We are also pleading with pedestrians to be cautious and only cross the road in designated places, and only when it is safe to do so,” said the MEC.

Meanwhile, MEC Macie has welcomed the arrest of a 35-year-old male for driving at 200 kilometres per hour in a 120 km/h zone at about 16h35 on the N3 toll road between Villiers and Heidelberg.

On the same road, a 38-year-old Pakistani male was arrested for driving at 176 kilometres per hour. Both drivers were charged with reckless and negligent driving at Grootvlei Police Station and were released on R2 000 bail each.

“We welcome the efforts of our law enforcement officers to bring to book errant drivers. Punishing reckless driver behaviour will go a long way in preventing deadly crashes on the road,” said the MEC.
