As part of the efforts to make schools safe havens for learning and teaching, the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL) will host the second annual Provincial School Safety Debates in Middelburg over the weekend.

Stakeholders such as the department of Education, Social Development and SAPS are expected to take part in a day long programme that will see 20 learners making presentation on the topic: “Reflection on our education system in the midst of bullying, gangsterism and drugs.”

Learners will also contribute researched presentations to the topic and will not be opposing each other as it was the case last year. Each learner will be afforded five minutes presentation on behalf of their respective regions. The four regions Ehlanzeni, Nkangala, Bohlabela and Gert Sibande will be represented by five learners each.

The learners’ work will not end on Saturday but they will also be expected to become ambassadors of school safety initiatives in their schools and neighbouring schools so that messages of school safety receives more impetus.

Saturday’s programme is part of the School Safety Projects that is spearheaded by DCSSL, Department of Education, SAPS and other stakeholders. Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Pat Ngomane will deliver a key note address and also officiate over prize giving ceremony.
